Excessive Control
Research indicates that excessive control efforts, such as attempts to rigidly suppress compulsive or food related thoughts or images (Polivy and Herman, 1987; Strauss, Doyle, and Kreipe, 1994), depressive thoughts (Segal, Williams, and Teasdale, 2002), and anxious moods (Mellinger and Lynn, 2003), can have quite the opposite effect.
